Mud Keys

This destination is only a short boat ride away. After just 30 minutes boat riding, we arrive at a mangrove maze made out of series of islands approximately 11 miles northeast of Key West. We will park our boat somewhere knee deep shallow, over a nice sandy bottom – so you can walk around and take pictures, swim or snorkel in turquoise water and sandbars.

Boca Grande

Do you want to see some of Florida’s most beautiful beaches? If so, then the Key West National Wildlife Refuge Island is one stop that should not be missed. It has a gorgeous natural beach and is 15 miles west of Key West. On your way there, you may spot dolphins playing in the water! We can also stop at the sponge garden off one of the islands for some snorkeling.

Snipe Point

The sandbar at Snipe Point is a popular destination for locals who spend their weekends boating. This island, often called “Snipes” – is extremely hard to find so boat rentals are unlikely to invade your space. You will be surrounded by locals and their families looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life on this gorgeous beach area. This destination is recommended on a 4hr trip.

To some extent – yes. Sometimes we will have to because the weather isn’t always ideal and we want to stay in shallow, calm waters to keep the trip enjoyable.

Are there going to be other people on the boat with us?

No. Every trip is private to your group.

Can we play our own music on the boat?

Absolutely. We have a portable Bluetooth speaker on board, so you can play your own music from your phone.

Are drinks included? Is there a cooler on the boat?

We have an iced cooler with bottled waters. You’re welcome to bring your own drinks, beers and snacks.

If we have 3 adults and 4 small children can we hire your boat?

Not on one boat, unfortunately. Per our license the Hurricane carries up to 6 passengers and the Robalo up to 4, and each child counts as one, just like adults. For a bigger group, book both boats together: see Private Sandbar Trips for Large Groups.

If we have a party of 7 to 10 and really want to go to the sandbar, can you help us?

Absolutely. Both of our boats go out together, side by side, so a group of up to 10 can share the day. Details on the Private Sandbar Trips for Large Groups page.

Are we going to see dolphins, manatees and other marine life on this trip?

There is always a chance for that and we often do, however we can’t promise that you’ll see them because they swim around freely and do not hang out in the same place.

Do you do fishing trips?

We do not. We are not a fishing charter, and we think our boats are just too pretty to have smelly fish guts all over them.

What is your cancellation policy?

48hrs before the scheduled boat trip to get a full refund if you happen to change your plans. All our trips are weather permitting so we reserve the right to cancel your trip if we don’t think that conditions are safe – in this case you would get full refund also.

This Key West National Wildlife Refuge Island lies 15 miles west of Key West. It is a perfect destination for a group or family that has at least 4 hours to spend with us – as it takes a 1-hour boat ride to get there from Key West. Boca Grande has a beautiful wild beach where we can pull up with our boat. If you live in Key West and own a boat – Boca Grande is a very popular local remote island beach where you take your family to. On the way there, you can often see dolphins playing (can’t guarantee it) or stop at the sponge garden off one of the islands for some snorkeling. It’s about 5 feet of water there, so it’s perfect for kids or nonperforming swimmers as it is not intimidating – yet you still see some fish and lobsters without having to dive deep.

Snipe Point, often called Snipes – is a very popular boat destination among the local boat owners. Huge, beautiful sandbar and a gorgeous beach area. Very tricky to get to, so boat renters are not gonna bother you there. You will meet a lot of locals bringing their families to relax. Don’t expect this place to be empty on a holiday weekend! Since it takes about 45 minutes to get there from Key West – this destination is recommended for a 3 hour or 4-hour boat trip.

This destination is just a short boat ride away, and it is perfect for a group that wants to get a taste of how our best destinations look like without spending too much time while keeping the budget low, and you still get the best possible boat and service. After 30 minutes boat ride, we arrive at a mangrove maze made out of series of islands approximately 11 miles northeast of Key West. We will park our boat somewhere knee deep shallow, over a nice sandy bottom – so you can walk around and take pictures of turquoise water and sandbars, swim, or snorkel. After 1hr over there, it takes 30 minutes to get back to our dock.

Are we guaranteed to go to all destinations mentioned in the itinerary?

Unfortunately not. All trips are weather permitting and sometimes the itinerary would need to be modified so we can avoid rough and choppy waters.

Is Snipe Point accessible in any weather conditions?

Because to get to Snipes we have to run in deeper gulf waters, this sandbar is not accessible during days of N, NW and NE winds. If we can’t get you there, we would offer to modify your itinerary so you would still have a very enjoyable boat tour.

What is the difference between 3 hours and 4 hours sandbar hopping trip?

3hr trip goes to sandbars located 30 minutes boat ride from Key West – Jewfish Sandbar and Mud Keys. 4hr trip goes further away to Snipes Sandbar – weather permitting.

Are we going to have the sandbars all to ourselves?

Usually not. There’s only a handful of these gorgeous destinations so they are often visited by local boat owners. The traffic is usually higher during weekends and holidays.

Which boat should we pick?

Both boats do the same trip to the same sandbars. Pick the Robalo if you are a party of 1 to 4 and want the best price. Pick the Hurricane if you want the most room and comfort, or if you are a party of 5 or 6.

Can we switch boats after booking?

Yes, as long as the other boat is free that day. Call or text us at 305-304-4800 and we will move you over.

Is a snorkeling stop by Archer Key mandatory?

This stop is optional. If you want to have more time for the beach at Boca Grande or see Woman Key, Ballast Key area – we would skip this stop to give ourselves more time elsewhere.

The map shows that you cross deep waters at some point. Are there going to be big waves?

There is a 2 mile stretch of deep water that we need to cross. Sometimes on windy days it can be bumpy there. If we think that it would be too rough we would modify the itinerary and destination.

Can you guarantee that we will see Woman Key and Ballast Key on this trip?

Because we have to peak out to the Atlantic to get to these two islands – sometimes on windy days it can be too rough to go there.

Can we walk on the beach on Boca Grande, Woman Key and Ballast Key?

Boca Grande – yes. Woman Key is a wildlife preserve area and Ballast Key is a private island. Even though we can’t go on them, we park the boat nearby in shallow water, swim and enjoy the surroundings.

Is it worth to go on the boat for just 2 hours?

Absolutely! Even though this boat trip is short – it goes to the beautiful destination.

Since this boat tour goes to Mud Key which is a bird sanctuary will we see birds?

Usually YES, however birds are in the keys seasonally and it also depends on other factors like tides etc.

Can we do this tour when it’s windy?

To some extend YES. To get to Mud Key we run in 2-3 feet of water for the entire time so even on a windy day there will be no big waves and the boat ride will be very comfortable. Mud Key has lots of Red Mangroves that protect from the wind for the time of the cruise and on the anchor.

Do both boats depart from the same location?

How deep is the water on the sandbar where we would watch the sunset?

Depends on the tide. On low tide it’ll be ankle deep, on high tide up to your waist or your belly. Either time you are welcome to hop into the water and watch the sun go down.

Is it going to be pitch black on the boat ride back after the sunset?

No. We will start riding back shortly after the sun disappears. We will have about 30 minutes of twilight time to safely get back to the marina.

Are we allowed to bring snacks and alcohol?

Yes. You are welcome to bring your own beer, wine, snacks etc. We will put it on ice for you.

What if the weather is bad?

We would modify the itinerary, reschedule or cancel and refund – depending on the weather conditions and what you would want to do.

Why is this trip going to one destination and why the itinerary says 30-45 minutes each way?

It takes time to prepare your meal and we can’t run a boat with the grill on. We have to favorite destinations for this trip: Mud Key or Snipe Point. Which one we would go to depends entirely on weather conditions.

What kind of seafood do you have for the tacos?

We have fresh fish, shrimp or lobster. What exactly you would get depends on what is in season, availability and individual arrangements. We would try to accommodate your requests if that’s possible.

How many tacos we would each have?

We cook a batch of fish, shrimp or lobster and we keep making tacos until everyone is full.

Is the fish in the tacos fresh and local? What kind of fish is it?

We get our seafood exclusively at Keys Fresh Seafood Market directly from the local fishermen who caught it. What kind of fish you would have depends on what they had caught the previous day.

Can each of us have tacos with different “protein”?

Because of the logistics and the fact that we will be cooking your meal on the boat (not in the restaurant kitchen) – the whole group would have to agree on the same kind of tacos.

Which destination does this trip go to?

Depending on the wind conditions we will take you to Mud Key or Snipe Point.

Can we substitute hot dogs for hamburgers?

Unfortunately not. Burgers are very greasy and cooking them on the boat is not safe as the grill could catch on fire.

How many hot dogs we will each have?

As many as you want. We will be sure to have enough so nobody would come back hungry from this trip.

Are hot dogs tasty?

Had the best day with capt. What a great experience boating through mangroves and hopping from one sandbar to the next. Each sandbar was a unique experience with white sand and crystal clear water to snorkel and watch tropical fish and crabs. Captain Jason was an awesome tour guide and great to talk to throughout the trip. Highly recommended especially for families with kids!

My wife, my son and his girlfriend (both 27) and I went out with Pavel and the kids rode the e-foil boards. They had an amazing time. Pavel and the kids all had helmets and could talk to each other. Pavel was very good at giving instructions and they progressed from prone to knees to eventually standing up and riding the boards. They had a blast. The boat ride out and back was also fun. It was a very nice 27 foot boat with plenty of room for the 5 of us. This was the highlight of the trip.

We had a great experience with Key West Boat Trips learning how to efoil. The instructor explained step by step how to begin and coached us through the helmet communication system. We had a great day doing the efoil lesson. It was not something I had ever done before but it was so fun and easy to learn. Pawvel was a great teacher and he had a helmet with a microphone on it so he can coach you when your away from the boat. The boat was also very nice too. At the end of the tour he rode around and took some go pro videos of my husband doing the foil board and sent them too me which was awesome. I would recommend this to anyone. It was a fun day !

Oh my goodness what a treat. And talk about going above and beyond the call of duty. To start we had called after a bad experience with a another boat rental service. Determined to have a good time and see the sights my fiancee and I called on a whim, we spoke to Pavel who was Amazing. He sent us over to his website and after we booked he sent us some directions and followed up to confirm. Pavel was incredibly nice and had us over to our boat captain quickly. We met captain scruffy who was also equally amazing. He had a fully stocked cooler with ice and music ready to go. BEST sunset boat ride eve!!! Super last minute accommodations. Worked with us so we could have an amazing experience. Played music we wanted to hear. Took pictures for us so we can save the memory forever. I have been around boats all my life. Felt super safe!!! Great ride. Worth every single penny!!! Our family had an awesome boat trip with Key West Boat Trips and Captain Turtle. Me, my husband, 12 year old daughter and 71 year old parents all had a blast. Captain Turtle was very informative, personable and fun. He had a great play list and sound system, comfy boat, shade and sun both, and took us to swim and snorkel around sand flats and also gave us a guided tour through the mangroves. He even spotted a giant loggerhead turtle while we were speeding back, which we got to stop and watch. We had a very low tide! The sand bar was exposed and we were able to explore and find conchs, sand dollars, and lots of other things. Even saw a sting Ray as we were departing the boat. Captain Turtle was knowledgeable and answered all our questions! Would definitely recommend this sunset trip!!!

Hi, Capt. Pawel. We had a great day and Capt. Turtle is the best. We beached the boat on the sandbar about an hour west in the gulf and just swam and relaxed for a couple of hours. We then enjoyed a ride across the open water and went to Snipes point which is a sandbar where you can walk in knee high water to an island. My husband, sister and I enjoyed the time and the peacefulness of it all. As we were returning to the dock we saw dolphins and Captain Pawel was able to follow the pod for a while as they played and jumped in and out of the water. We could almost touch them they were so close to the boat. It was a lovely experience and one that I would do again with Key West Boats Tours with Pawel and recommend to anyone looking for something more than crawl on Duval.

Pawel was our host for our 4 hour afternoon trip. He is personable and knowledgeable, and planned our trip based on current conditions. The boat was nice and spacious for our party of 5.
